The three basic measurements of a dog’s body are the Length, the Girth (Chest) and the Neck.

The Length of your dog’s back is measured along the top of the spine from the high part of the back between the shoulders (withers), where the neck joins the body, to the base of the tail where the tail joins the body. Figure 1.

The Neck is measured at the place where your dog’s collar would naturally rest – from about the top of the chest to just above the withers- this measurement is also taken all the way around. Figure 2.

The Girth (or Chest) measurement is taken all the way around the biggest part of your dog’s ribcage, generally just behind the withers down and around just behind the front legs and back up the other side. Figure 3.

How to measure for female dogs Panties? Measure the circumference of your dog’s waist right in front of hip bones (rump).

It helps to have everything you need ready before you start. When you are all done, don’t forget to treat your dog for being such a good model!

A seamstress’ or tailor’s type tape measure is the best, but if you don’t have one- mark the measurement on the ribbon, and then use the ruler to measure it.

Put your dog on the flat surface (it’s a good idea to use the tabletop) to stand on.

Prepare a piece of paper and a pen, ask a friend to help keep the dog in the proper position if necessary.

Now you are ready to measure. Have the dog stand straight with all four legs spaced normally under the body and head and tail up. Use the diagram above for the measurement points. Write down each measurement, and then measure a second time just to be sure.

Take each measurement a bit loosely, so there will be room for your dog to move and breath, but not too loose. Do not add extra, that is taken into consideration by manufacturers. You need the actual body measurements of the dog, not the dimesions of the finished apparel.
